Here are some great packing tips compiled over years of traveling experience and with the suggestions from few fellow travelers.
1.Security is really important
Don’t forget to scan the important documents like passport and paper tickets (if they aren’t e-type). Store all these in an email account which is accessible over the Internet.
Store emergency contact numbers, credit card numbers, credit card 800 numbers etc in a secure account in case these are needed in case of an emergency.
2.Split up all of your valuable possessions
Splitting up bank cards, credit cards, cash in different pockets, wallet and bags while packing can prove to be beneficial during traveling. In a situation if you are pick-pocketed or loose your wallet, you will still be able to manage the situation. Do not keep any of the cards or money in the checked in baggage.
3.Small Bottles
Use small bottles to pack small items and especially toiletries. There are plenty of sturdy and waterproof ones available in the super market. You can pack your shampoos or lotions in these small bottles instead of carrying those big bottles along with you. Minimizing toiletries like taking just half bottle of toothpaste or shampoo is a great idea for that perfect packing.
4.Backpack Tips
While packing things into a backpack, place lighter items at the bottom and heavy ones on top. This way you will feel less weight on your lower back. It’s smart to place your most required things on top of the backpack. Dirty clothes are of course to be placed at the bottom.
5.Plastic Bags
It’s always handy to have some plastic bags around. This protects your bag from any kind of leakage; also these bags can be used to keep dirty clothes in, also as garbage bags or may be as a makeshift umbrella. Airtight bags or zip lock bags are found to be the best.
6.Clothes
This is really important. Pack only what you know you’ll use. In case you’re traveling for more than 3 weeks, plan to do laundry during the trip.
7.Split up clothes while traveling with others
If traveling with a companion, divide most of your clothes among various suitcases/bags/backpacks etc. In case your luggage is lost or delayed, you’ll still have some clean clothes available with you. Most of the airline companies won’t compensate for your lost luggage for the first 24-48 hours so this will help you save money in case it happens to you.
8.Roll Technique
Rolling clothes instead of folding them while packing them in bags can provide you sufficient space for packing. For preventing wrinkles roll the items in tissue paper.
9.Thinking about carrying a lot of luggage?
Carrying a lot of luggage is not at all advised. Most airlines are changing luggage policies and continue to reduce the free luggage allowed per traveler to save on fuel cost. For domestic travel, one is allowed to take one bag whereas International travel allows up to 2 checked in bags per traveler. One can take extra baggage by paying an additional fee per bag or by the weight. Check the airline website to get the latest weight and baggage policies.
10. Pack in Plastics
Pack every item in clear plastic bags; divide them e.g. t-shirts, underwear, shorts etc before placing them in your backpack or suitcase. For each type of clothing there should be one plastic bag. This can be really beneficial in many ways. You’ll immediately recognize what you want during unpacking.
