Some Tips for Camping in Yosemite

Picturesque and scenic Yosemite National Park is hardly a day-trip destination. However, lordly, rugged beauty of Yosemite’s natural realm renowned all across the globe creates a unique urge in thousands of tourists to stay and camp at the park every year for plenty of days. Known as the crown jewels, Yosemite National Park must be visited by every backpacker, camper or anyone who loves adventure and outdoors. It’s situated in the central Sierra Nevada of California and is approximately 150 miles east of San Francisco. From Los Angeles it’s just six hour drive away. Entitled as world Heritage Site in Year 1984, Yosemite is internationally acclaimed for its extraordinary granite cliffs, clear streams, huge sequoia groves and biological diversity. Scattered on 750,000-acres and 1,200 sq miles, this park contains thousands of ponds and lakes, some 1600 miles of streams, hiking trails of 800 miles and roads of almost 350 miles.
With almost 13 campsites Yosemite’s is good enough at accommodating campers. The National Park Services provides important guidelines for camping, regulations for the duration of a camping stay and number of people can stay in a camp site.
Moreover, before heading to Yosemite, you must learn all rules and regulations for camping at Yosemite. If you don’t follow them, violation may result in some fine or even revocation of your camping permit.

Here are a few tips:

  • Plan your camping duration in Yosemite National Park beforehand. Maximum duration of camping is 30 days during a calendar year. For any visit between May 1 and Sep 15, the camping duration is 14 days, out of them only 7 days can be in Wawona or Yosemite Valley.
  • Up to 6 people in a group, including children, are permitted per campsite.
  • Light out hours are from 10 pm to 6 am, generators can be used sparingly during daytime hours.
  • Campfires are permitted at any time of the year. Fires must be extinguished thoroughly with water when not attended.
  • Collection of Firewood is not allowed in Yosemite Valley. Campers can buy firewood from stores located near most of the campgrounds. Firewood that is brought to Yosemite from more than fifty miles can spread unwanted pests.
  • Camping in vehicles is allowed only in some designated campsites.
  • Maximum of 2 vehicles are permitted in every campsite. All Vehicles must be properly parked on the parking pad. Extra parking is available. Parkingcan be availed near each campground for no extra charge.
  • Pets are allowed in almost all campgrounds except Tamarack Flat, Camp 4, and Porcupine Flat. Pets should be taken care of and must not be left unattended.
  • Food must be properly stored.
  • Don’t connect electrical extended cords to restroom outlets of campgrounds.
  • Camp’s wastewater must be disposed properly in utility drains.
